Wooden Staff Workshop

Information & Requirements:
  • Must be 8 years old on up (Green Sash minimum) or 13 years old on up (Any Sash Level)
  • Date: Typically the second Saturday of each month (please check the calendar for specific dates)
  • Time: 9:30 - 11:00 AM
  • Location: Lake Murray Park (View a map here.)
There will be a combined class that day for the 8-12 green/red sashes and 13-17 year olds from 9:00 - 10:00 am for those that cannot attend this workshop.*Note: When checking out, please tell us your child's name so we know who is going to be at the staff workshop.

Description

Our long-staff workshops teach students how to handle this weapon, which without proper training cannot be used effectively. A staff workshop will teach you that ultimately, self-defense does not stop with your hands. It involves using a weapon as an extension of your body. Furthermore, our wooden staffs offer a unique blend of weight and safety - thicker, heavier oak staffs offer more power behind strikes, but require greater amounts of strength to wield then. They are also more difficult to train on, as mistakes hurt much more! On the other hand, padded staffs are very light and do not hurt when hit by one, but they are not weighted and thus do not teach students the required control and technique.

We use waxwood staffs at our staff workshop - they are an "in-the-middle" choice for the student who is looking to gain more awareness of their body and strength while not sacrificing control or safety. They enable both an excellent entry point for the beginner as well as a scaleable challenge for the advanced student who wants to take his weapons training to the next level.

All of our Instructors have experience with a variety of weapons and were taught by Sifu Mario in their earlier years. We are very excited to bring back something that was so beneficial to our training!  A new found respect and awareness will be attained from wooden staff training for those who participate.
